Common Questions

We believe you make the best decisions when you have accurate information. We encourage you to contact us with any questions so we can help you get the answers you need. Here are some commonly asked questions:

Is it safe? Yes, both methods of abortion  are very safe in early pregnancy. The risks of complications in a first trimester abortion are very low and at least ten times safer than childbirth. But, even with the most careful medical care before, during, and after an abortion, there are possible complications. At your visit we will review these rare but possible risks and complications so you will be able to recognize their symptoms. We also offer 24/7 support in case of emergency.

When will I get my next period? You should get your period within 4 to 8 weeks after your abortion. If you begin using a hormonal birth control method (such as the pill, patch, Nuvaring, etc.), after the abortion your bleeding pattern may be different and will be discussed with you at your appointment.

Can I get an abortion if I am under 18 years old? Yes. If you are under 18 years of age, Maine State Law requires you to talk with an adult about your decision to have an abortion. This can be an adult relative, school nurse, medical provider, or a staff member at the Center.

How will having an abortion affect my emotions? Every person’s experience and situation is unique. A lot of people feel relieved to be able to return to their normal lives. It is also normal to feel a range of emotions like grief, loss, sadness, and anger. We encourage you to talk to friends and family about your feelings, or call and talk to us if needed. Most people do not have long-term emotional difficulties from having an abortion. If you worry about how you will feel after the abortion, talking to someone about your feelings is helpful. Deciding to have an abortion is your decision—you should not have an abortion because you feel you have no option. It is very important that your decision to have an abortion is YOURS and not forced upon you by someone else.

Do you have information about birth control? Yes, we can discuss birth control options with you on the phone, at your appointment, or at your follow-up.

Are your services confidential? Yes. Your privacy is important to us and we take confidentiality seriously. No one will be able to look at your records without your written permission or legal authorization. We can also discuss ways to keep phone calls and mail confidential as well.

Is your building safe/secure? Yes. We strive to provide a safe and secure facility for all of our clients and visitors while also maintaining an atmosphere that is comfortable and welcoming. We are located in a private condominium complex and our unit has a locked entry. When you arrive, you will be asked for your name and then let in through a buzzer.

Will there be protesters/picketers? Yes, we do occasionally see picketers on Mt. Hope Ave. at the entry of the Evergreen Woods complex. Because we are on private property, however, they are not permitted to come into the complex or past Mt. Hope Ave., ensuring your privacy and safety is maintained during your visit. We recommend that you ignore them.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment? Yes, we invite you to bring one support person to accompany you. (While you are welcome to bring more than one person with you to accompany you during your visit, we are only able to accommodate one support person during the procedure due to room size.)

Does insurance cover abortion? Yes. MaineCare and most private insurance plans cover abortion. (NOTE: Your private insurance plan may count abortion care costs toward your deductible so that you are still responsible for the out-of-pocket fee.)

Do you accept personal checks? No, we are unable to accept personal checks. You can pay by cash, money order, debit/credit card or online.

What if I can’t afford an abortion? Many of our clients receive financial assistance to help cover some part of the cost of their abortion care; please talk to us if you need assistance. We are committed to helping peopleaccess abortion care regardless of their ability to pay so please call as soon as possible so we can work with you to arrange payment. Please do not let cost prevent you from contacting us.

What if I am later in my second trimester and need abortion care? Some people do seek abortion care later in pregancy. We support people in making decisions about their own health and to access needed abortion care throughout pregnancy. There are providers who offer abortion through 24 weeks of pregnancy or later, depending on individual circumstances. Please contact us for help getting a referral. We are connected to a network of trusted providers and would be happy to assist you in finding care and access to transportation and funding support. You can also contact the National Abortion Federation Hotline for assistance:  1-877-257-0012.
